An Introduction
A long time ago, Shamus Culhane reminisced about how during his time at the Schlesinger studio, he saw the in-house production number for Inki and the Minah Bird so many times while working on it to the point of revulsion. When he saw the finished cartoon, he was amazed to see that same number managed to make its way outside of the studio and got plastered in the titles under the WB Presents shield. It was an anomaly that began late in the 1943 season; no other studio in the sound era had or would put their in-house production numbers in the opening credits. (Earlier, the number underneath the shield corresponded with the release number assigned to the cartoon by Vitaphone.) Whoever made this call inadvertently gave future historians and researchers a much easier job.
This list is not meant to be a bible of any kind. Some of the numbers may very well be wrong, as certain cartoons at the end of the studio’s run feature identical production numbers in the opening titles. Blue Ribbon reissues were also assigned production numbers that may be identical to the new shorts released that season.
Keep in mind too, you can’t make too many inferences by the numbers alone. All the production number is is what was assigned to that cartoon’s story. While in some cases the reasons for disparities are obvious (cartoons done by the faster Cinecolor process having much higher production numbers than the Technicolor shorts of that season), a cartoon with an earlier production number that wasn’t released until after one with a later production number could mean anything.
As you can tell, this is the makings of a Rashomon of a research project. Armchair experts need not apply.
Bearing all this in mind, a production number guide is still extremely useful and more accurately chronological than going by release date. Those release dates present in the history books are largely estimated and could be off by several weeks. The backlog is something to be considered too; post World War II, the Warner shorts backlog was 18-24 months, which is why cartoons released in 1949 bear a 1947 copyright notice, and also why the studio could close down for six months in 1953 with no discernible changes being apparent until well into the 1955 release season.
At the present, there is no easy way to get the production numbers for shorts prior to the changeover from Vitaphone short number to in-house number. Production artwork and documentation are adorned with the in-house production numbers (model sheets in particular), and I therefore humbly ask anyone with anything of the sort in their collection to come forward and submit the numbers. You would be doing wonders for animation archaeology.
Until 1945, the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies were not part of the same production number code; for instance, Tom Turk and Daffy‘s number of 1-14 meant it was the first Looney Tune of the fourteenth season, while Meatleass Flyday’s 1-13 meant the first Merrie Melody of the thirteenth season. (Remember, the Merrie Melodies began a year after the Looney Tunes.) Beginning with One Meat Brawl, the now Warner-owned studio shifted to a four digit production number code. Beginning as 10-15 (the tenth Looney Tune of the fifteenth season), the hyphen was dropped and it became 1015. From thereon, both the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies went by the same production code, given, as Friz Freleng yelled at nerds who asked him, a distinction wasn’t necessary.
This page would not be possible without the invaluable work of David Mackey, whose animation site is one of the cornerstones of the validity of the Internet. Keith Scott is largely responsible for why the list of production numbers for the 1944-49 releases is mostly complete. Work done by historians Michael Barrier, Jerry Beck, Jon Cooke, Bob Furmanek, David Gerstein, Mark Kausler, Dave Koch, Kevin Langley, and Larry Tremblay was also exceptionally useful. Special thanks to Devon Baxter, who’s still sleuthing for these when I’m not.
